Outdoor transformation set for Urunga Library

The upgrade of Urunga Library will create a more welcoming and accessible community space, with new opportunities for outdoor learning, cultural activities and social connection for residents and visitors alike.

The improvements will expand the library’s programming beyond its walls, supporting outdoor storytime sessions, cultural workshops and art activities while complementing the broader Urunga CBD upgrade and activating the neighbouring reserve.

Bellingen Shire Mayor Steve Allan said the project would deliver lasting benefits for the community.

“Urunga Library has no existing outdoor activities – with these fantastic upgrades the current program will be expanded to feature outdoor storytime sessions, cultural workshops and art activities,” Allan said.

“The project will support the upcoming Urunga CBD upgrade and help bring the neighbouring reserve to life, encouraging increased use of the space by the community and visitors to the town.

“Libraries are important community hubs for connection and lifelong learning. We want every member of our community to feel welcome and able to easily access and enjoy the new space. The upgrade will be designed with everyone in mind from young families engaging in play to people looking for a quiet spot to relax with their favourite book.”

The project is supported through NSW Government funding administered by the State Library of NSW to help councils improve public library services and community facilities across the state.

NSW State Librarian Dr Caroline Butler-Bowdon said the investment recognised the important role libraries play in communities.

“Public libraries across NSW are building on a long tradition of supporting education, literacy, culture and recreation.”

“I am pleased that this funding will help to deliver improved libraries for communities all over NSW. We know that libraries benefit people at all stages of their lives, providing free and impartial access to information, and this has never been more important.”

“The State Library greatly values its relationship with the public library network and is pleased to administer this funding on behalf of the Government.”

Residents can follow the project’s progress on the Bellingen Shire Council website under Urunga Precinct Upgrades.
