Nineteen Mid North Coast high school students have had a hands-on introduction to the construction industry through a TAFE NSW program aimed at building the region’s future skilled workforce.
Students from Macksville, Woolgoolga, Toormina and Coffs Harbour high schools took part in the four-week TAFE NSW Start Your Future program at the Coffs Harbour Education Campus.
The Year 9, 10 and 11 students developed practical skills in carpentry and cabinet making while exploring pathways into trade qualifications and careers.
The program comes as the region prepares for increased demand for skilled construction workers.
The City of Coffs Harbour’s Affordable Housing Strategy estimates the number of dwellings in the local government area will increase by more than 13,200 by 2041.
TAFE NSW Construction Head Teacher Michael Moore said practical experience could help students develop skills and explore career opportunities.
“Hands-on learning encourages students to problem-solve and build practical skills they might not otherwise get the chance to do.” said Moore.
“The TAFE NSW Start Your Future program is a unique opportunity for students to get on the tools and tap into some of the region’s most rewarding careers.
“The construction industry in the Mid North Coast is booming, and businesses are crying out for local young talent. This presents an exciting opportunity for young people thinking about learning a trade – no matter your age or gender.”
NSW Department of Education Educational Pathways Program Head Teacher Careers Dionne Court said giving students experience in different industries could help them make decisions about their futures.
“For many young people, choosing what they want to do after school can feel daunting, so giving students the opportunity to try different career options can unlock new possibilities.” said Court.
“Working closely with TAFE NSW, we’re helping students build confidence, discover their strengths and make informed decisions about their future.
“Programs like TAFE NSW Start Your Future exposes young people to careers our region needs, and provides them with skills they can apply to vocational qualifications or the job site.”
TAFE NSW Start Your Future gives high school students interested in practical, hands-on careers an opportunity to explore vocational areas they may consider for future study, work or both.
The program is a NSW Government initiative delivered as part of the Department of Education’s Educational Pathways Program.
