Camera-equipped vehicles will begin surveying more than 1,700 kilometres of sealed roads across the MidCoast from Thursday, October 8, as part of planning for future road maintenance.
MidCoast Council said the vehicles will use road-monitoring cameras to capture detailed video and assess the condition of road assets across the region.
Experienced operators will drive the assessment vehicles at normal traffic speeds, with hazard lights and other warning devices in use. The vehicles will be clearly identifiable and are expected to operate within normal traffic conditions.
Motorists travelling behind one of the vehicles are being asked to leave at least a full car length between vehicles to give the cameras a clear view of the road surface.
Council said information collected through the survey will help guide future maintenance and renewal programs, with the aim of improving connectivity, mobility and road safety.
The assessment will also provide an updated picture of the condition of the region’s sealed road network.
The last survey was carried out in 2023, with the new results to be compared against the previous data to identify changes and provide further insight into the condition of local roads.
Council said residents’ privacy would be protected during the survey, with cameras directed only at road surfaces.
