A local government heavyweight with 45 years in the game has just taken charge at Clarence Valley Council.

Steve McGrath has been appointed Interim General Manager while the search for a permanent General Manager gets under way.

McGrath officially started in the role on Wednesday, 4 November.

His appointment has been welcomed by the council’s Interim Administrator, who said Mr McGrath brings significant experience and a strong understanding of local government to the job.

“Steve is a highly respected local government leader with 45 years of experience, 32 of those as a General Manager, and a strong understanding of the opportunities and challenges facing councils and their communities,” said Interim Administrator John Rayner PSM.

“He brings a wealth of experience, strong leadership skills and a genuine commitment to working with staff and the community.”

McGrath steps in after six weeks with Adam Cameron at the helm as Acting General Manager.

Mr Rayner made a point of thanking Mr Cameron for steering the council through that time.

“I thank Adam for his support over recent weeks and his commitment to Council providing services over the time,” Rayner said.

So how long will Mr McGrath be in charge?

The recruitment process for the new General Manager is expected to take about four to five months, putting a permanent appointment some time in the first half of 2027.

Until then, Rayner is backing his new interim leader to deliver.

“I’m confident Steve will make a valuable contribution to Council and provide strong leadership as we continue delivering for the community,” he said.
