A major upgrade of the Alstonville Cultural Centre is set to transform the site into a modern, expanded community hub for the growing Alstonville and Wollongbar communities.
Ballina Shire Council is progressing the redevelopment, which will include a significantly larger, two-storey library expanding from 145 square metres to 756 square metres.
The new library is designed as a contemporary space for learning and connection, with dedicated children’s areas, study and digital learning spaces, meeting rooms and flexible layouts to support a wide range of programs.
The broader project will also deliver upgraded community facilities, including a larger sports court, air-conditioned multi-purpose spaces, improved amenities and a new entrance and foyer.
Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the redevelopment would provide long-term benefits for the community.
“This project will transform the Alstonville Cultural Centre into a modern, welcoming space that better meets the needs of our community now and into the future,” she said.

To allow construction to begin, Alstonville Library will temporarily relocate to Wollongbar Community Hall from May 2026.
The current library will close on Saturday 25 April, before reopening at the temporary location on Tuesday 12 May.
Mayor Cadwallader said the relocation was a necessary step in delivering the upgraded facility.
“The new library will be significantly larger and more flexible, providing improved spaces for reading, study, programs and community use,” she said.
While some services will be limited during the temporary relocation, including public computers and printing, access to digital services and most programs will continue.
Construction is expected to begin in early May 2026, with the upgraded cultural centre anticipated to be completed by mid-2027, weather permitting.
