Man charged after alleged courthouse window smashing in Ballina

A 29-year-old man has been charged after 12 windows were allegedly smashed at a courthouse and a nearby business in Ballina overnight.

Police were called to Martin Street about 10:35 pm on Thursday following reports of a man smashing windows.

Officers allege six windows at the Ballina courthouse and six windows at a nearby business were damaged.

Police attempted to negotiate with the man, who allegedly failed to comply with directions.

Officers then deployed a Taser and arrested the man after he allegedly approached police while armed with a baseball bat.

The man was taken to Ballina Police Station and charged with two counts of destroy or damage property and armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He was refused bail and is due to appear before Bail Division Court 1 on Friday.
