Young writers make a splash in National Water Week competition

Young writers across the MidCoast have been recognised for their creativity, with the winners of MidCoast Council’s second annual National Water Week Junior Writing Prize announced.

The competition attracted its highest number of entries to date, with students exploring this year’s theme, ‘Water connects everything’, through stories, reflections and poetry.

Manning Valley Anglican College student Harvey Crameri took out first place in the primary school category for The water that connects our family, a personal reflection on how water connects generations of his family.

MidCoast Christian College student Chloe Ekins claimed first prize in the junior high school category for The Rockpool’s Song, an imaginative piece exploring water’s ability to bring people together and provide relaxation, comfort and healing.

Taree boarding school student Eva Wood McGuire won the senior high school category with her poem Water Bird.

The poem takes readers on a journey along the Manning River, from its origins in the Barrington Tops to where it meets the ocean at Old Bar and beyond.

Along the way, it explores the landscapes, industries and communities connected by the river.

MidCoast Council Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services Rob Scott said this year’s theme encouraged students to explore the many ways water connects people, communities and the natural environment.

“From water as a defining feature of family history to a source of sustenance, survival, destruction or relaxation, the entries we received this year were really thought-provoking and diverse,” said Scott.

“Thank you to all the students who took the time to put their creative skills to use and take part in the competition. We look forward to seeing even more entries next year.”
