Nambucca Valley’s new Deputy Mayor has big tourism hopes for the valley

He first fell for the Nambucca Valley as a kid on school holidays. Now Cr David Jones is the valley’s new Deputy Mayor, and he has big plans for its tourism future.

Deputy Mayor Jones was elected to the role by fellow councillors at Nambucca Valley Council’s meeting on Wednesday, 28 October, for a term of one year.

This year marks 10 years for him as a Nambucca Valley councillor, and he said it was an exciting time to step up, with excellent opportunities on the horizon for the region.

“We’ve got a really great Council, a really diverse Council, which I think is a good thing,” said Nambucca Valley Deputy Mayor David Jones.

“We’ve had three different Deputy Mayors in three years, which provides a fresh approach.”

“I’m looking forward to getting out and meeting people, listening and supporting our Mayor Gary Lee.”

Nambucca Valley Mayor Gary Lee welcomed Deputy Mayor Jones to the role, and thanked Cr Susan Jenvey for her time as Deputy Mayor from 26 November 2025 until 28 October 2026.

Before Cr Jenvey, Cr James Angel served as Deputy Mayor for one year.

Council resolved in 2024 to elect a Deputy Mayor for a one-year term, as allowed under the Local Government Act 1993.

Deputy Mayor Jones has lived in the Nambucca Valley for 14 years, but his connection goes back much further.

“I came here as a seven or eight year-old child on school holidays from Victoria,” Deputy Mayor Jones said.

“I’ve always thought our beautiful valley has massive tourism potential.”

He sees big opportunities ahead, from new national parks to cultural experiences.

“There are many opportunities on the horizon with the Great Koala National Park and cultural tourism experiences with Gumbaynggirr people and amazing locations such as Gaagal Wanggaan National Park,” Deputy Mayor Jones said.

“Tourism creates a lot of jobs in our area as well, supporting people and small businesses all the way from Scotts Head, to Valla, out to Taylors Arm and everywhere in-between.”

“I’d really like to help support these healthy industries and jobs to grow in our valley.”
