Sharpes Beach Precinct upgrade now open to community

Ballina Shire Council has completed the Sharpes Beach Precinct Accessibility Upgrade, with the improved coastal precinct now open to residents and visitors.

The project was jointly funded by the NSW Government, which contributed $1.05 million, and Ballina Shire Council, which contributed $1.3 million.

Minister for North Coast Janelle Saffin said the upgrade would improve access and amenity at one of the region’s most popular beaches.

“The North Coast is defined by our world-class coastline, and this project ensures that one of Ballina’s most beautiful beaches is now inclusive for people of all ages and abilities,” Ms Saffin said.

“By investing $1.05 million into these upgrades, the NSW Government is improving safety and facilities, supporting the local economy and making it easier for everyone — locals and visitors alike — to enjoy this iconic environment.”

Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said Council’s $1.3 million contribution reflected the community’s strong connection to the beach.

“Our community loves Sharpes Beach, which is why Council has made a significant investment in this project,” Cr Cadwallader said.

“These upgrades make it easier for everyone to enjoy this stretch of coastline, with safer access, improved facilities and new inclusive features supporting surfers, swimmers, walkers, cyclists, families and visitors.”

Cadwallader said the works would also support local surf lifesavers.

“The new storage area and facilities help our surf lifesavers continue their vital work keeping our beaches safe,” she said.

Upgrade works include:

  • An asphalt car park, including formalised and accessible parking
  • Accessible toilet and shower facilities
  • Beach showers
  • An accessible viewing platform
  • Storage for surf lifesaving equipment
  • Additional connecting paths, bicycle racks, drinking fountains and seating
  • Shade trees, landscaping and drainage improvements
  • Restoration and enhancement of native vegetation

Council said the upgrade responds to growing demand at Sharpes Beach and improves safety, accessibility and amenity for all users.

The project followed community consultation on a draft design in 2023, with further public exhibition during the Development Application process before finalisation.

Residents and visitors are now invited to use the upgraded precinct.
