Coffs Harbour goes bananas at record-breaking moment

Coffs Harbour residents gathered in large numbers at Jetty Beach Saturday morning, forming a giant human banana in a colourful display of community spirit.

Hundreds of people, many dressed in yellow, stretched across the sand in an attempt to set a world record for the largest banana formed by people. The event paid tribute to the region’s banana-growing heritage while highlighting local pride.

Hosted by Coffs Harbour Mayor Nikki Williams and Channel Nine’s Jane DeGraff, the gathering brought together families, community groups and visitors.

Mayor Williams said the event reflected what makes the region unique.

“This was such a fun way to celebrate our community,” she said.

“We’ve always known Coffs Harbour is a special place — today was about showing MyCoffs to the rest of Australia. Seeing so many people come together like this really speaks to the pride we have in where we live.”

The event also aimed to boost Coffs Harbour’s entry in the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards.

“Tourism is such an important part of our local economy, supporting jobs, small businesses and the future of our region,” Mayor Williams said.

“Events like this not only bring people together, they help showcase everything that makes Coffs Harbour a destination worth visiting — and worth voting for.”

The Coffs Coast, known for its beaches, natural environment and strong community ties, continues to build its reputation as a leading tourism destination.

As the crowd dispersed, organisers said the event was about more than a record attempt, encouraging residents and visitors to celebrate the region.

Voting in the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards remains open until 3 May, with supporters able to back Coffs Harbour and follow MyCoffs on social media for further updates.
