Grafton Library restoration to secure community services for years to come

Residents will benefit from improved library facilities and the continued delivery of essential community services when major restoration works begin at Grafton Library this month.

The project will repair damage caused by the August 2025 hailstorm and return the building to full operation, ensuring the library remains a safe, reliable and sustainable community asset.

Clarence Valley Council has appointed Campbell Construction Co Pty Ltd to undertake the works, which are expected to be completed within seven weeks, weather permitting.

The upgrades will include a new roof, replacement of the solar power system, electrical repairs and internal restoration works.

Council said the project is about more than repairing storm damage, it is an investment in the long-term future of one of the region’s most important public facilities.

Once completed, the works will:

  • Ensure the continued delivery of library services for the community
  • Improve the building’s operational efficiency
  • Reduce ongoing maintenance costs
  • Enhance the facility’s environmental sustainability
  • Protect the asset against future weather-related impacts

While construction will result in some temporary disruptions, including changes to parking arrangements and short-term service closures, Council said the long-term benefits for library users and the wider community far outweigh the inconvenience.

The restoration follows extensive planning and consultation with Council’s insurer after the library sustained significant roof damage during the 2025 hailstorm, which led to water ingress and internal damage throughout the building.

Construction is scheduled to begin on Friday, 19 June, with the library expected to reopen in early August.

The project is funded through Council’s insurer, with Council initially covering the costs before seeking reimbursement on completion.
