Port Macquarie tiler set to shine at Global Skills Challenge

A Port Macquarie tiler is preparing to test his skills against some of the world’s best young tradespeople at the 2026 Global Skills Challenge in Wollongong from 24 to 28 June.

TAFE NSW student Logan Harrison will compete alongside participants from 15 countries in a series of industry-based challenges designed to reflect real-world conditions and international standards. Three of TAFE NSW’s four Illawarra campuses will host the event.

The five-day competition provides competitors with an opportunity to refine their technical skills, build industry networks and prepare for the 2026 WorldSkills International Competition in Shanghai in September.

Australia’s national team, the Skillaroos, comprises 38 competitors supported by expert trainers and mentors. Ten TAFE NSW students earned places in the squad after progressing through regional competitions and the 2025 National Championships.

Harrison, 22, who studies at TAFE NSW Newcastle, said the event would provide valuable experience ahead of the international competition.

“It will be great to see what I’m up against before I head off to China,” Harrison said.

“I’m nervous but really excited to be able to benchmark myself against some of the world’s best in my trade.

“It’s great experience and exposure for me, and good advertising for my employer Hodgo’s Tiling Solutions, which has been so supportive of me.”

The Global Skills Challenge will feature 33 disciplines, including carpentry, plumbing, cooking, healthcare, cyber security, graphic design technology, mechatronics and automotive refinishing.

Minister for Skills, TAFE and Tertiary Education Steve Whan said the event would showcase the strength of Australia’s vocational education and training sector.

“This competition gives students from TAFE NSW and across Australia the chance to test themselves at an elite level. It showcases the emerging talent of our vocational education and training sector,” Whan said.

“Each of them has already demonstrated exceptional skill, resilience and determination to reach this stage. The experience of competing alongside their international peers will not only prepare them for the competition in Shanghai but also grow their confidence and help shape their careers.

“It’s inspiring to see so many talented students stepping up to showcase their trades with pride. Good luck to Logan and the eight other TAFE NSW students representing Australia. I congratulate them on a fantastic achievement earned through unwavering dedication and the strong support of their teachers.”

The Global Skills Challenge is expected to attract competitors, trainers and industry representatives from around the world, providing a platform to showcase vocational excellence and strengthen international connections ahead of the WorldSkills competition in Shanghai.
