Community invited to come together for the NAB Darrel Chapman Fun Run

Families, friends, schools, businesses and community groups are being encouraged to come together when the NAB Darrel Chapman Fun Run returns to Lismore on Sunday, 30 August.

The annual event has become a longstanding tradition across the Northern Rivers, bringing together people of all ages and abilities while raising funds to support local children and families accessing healthcare.

Hosted by Our Kids in partnership with NAB, Lismore City Council and The Lord’s Taverners, the event celebrates community spirit, with options for everyone to get involved.

The Terania Consulting 4km Walk/Run will again be free, making it easy for families, first-time participants and casual walkers to take part. Those looking for a greater challenge can enter the Lord’s Taverners 10km Walk/Run or the Lismore City Council Masters Games Half Marathon (21km). People unable to attend in person can also participate through the Southern Cross University Virtual Marathon.

Our Kids Fundraising Coordinator Rebekka Battista said online registration for the free 4km event was important to help organisers plan for a safe and successful day.

“Registration is essential so we can account for everyone on the course and ensure the event runs safely. There’s also the opportunity to make a donation during registration to help support local children and families,” Battista said.

Schools, workplaces, sporting clubs and community organisations are also invited to take part in the NAB Team Community or Corporate Challenge or the Lismore Workers Club School Challenge, with the highest fundraising team receiving the challenge trophy.

This year’s event is supported by Connect Accountants, Mountain Blue, BASEC and Southern Cross University, reflecting the strong backing the fun run receives from local businesses and organisations.

After attracting more than 1,200 participants last year, organisers are hoping even more people from across the Northern Rivers and South East Queensland will join this year’s event.

“Last year we had more than 1,200 participants, and this year we’d love to see that number grow beyond 1,500,” Battista said.

“We’d love to see people from right across the Northern Rivers and South East Queensland pull on their joggers, gather their family and friends, and either walk or run to support Our Kids. Every person who takes part helps make a difference for local children needing medical care.”

Participants in the 10km and 21km events who register during the Early Bird period can personalise their race bib with their name or nickname, giving family and friends the chance to cheer them on by name.

Whether walking, running, pushing a pram, bringing the family dog or dressing up for fun, everyone is encouraged to be part of the day.

The Darrel Chapman Fun Run has grown into one of the Northern Rivers’ best-supported community events, combining fitness, fundraising and local pride to improve health services and equipment for children across the region.

Darrel Chapman was a husband, father, academic and respected sporting figure who died from cancer in October 1992.

Educated at St John’s College, Woodlawn, near Lismore, Chapman represented Australia in rugby league and captained South Sydney before becoming NSW Assistant Director of Sport. He later established the Human Movement Science and Sport Management program at Southern Cross University.

His legacy continues through the annual Darrel Chapman Fun Run, which brings the community together each year to support better healthcare outcomes for local children and families.
