Coffs Harbour’s Jetty Strip precinct is edging closer to a major transformation, with the City of Coffs Harbour Council locking in a funding plan to help pay for it.
At its meeting on Thursday, 20 August, council endorsed a Development Contribution Plan that will raise close to $8 million toward the infrastructure works needed along the showcase stretch of Harbour Drive, about a quarter of the total cost.
Under the plan, developers building in the immediate Jetty Strip area will pay $6,381.32 per lot or dwelling. Developers building elsewhere across the local government area, excluding Woolgoolga, will pay $789.10 per lot or dwelling.
The money will go toward a long list of works mapped out in the Jetty Strip Structure Plan: a beautified, more functional Harbour Drive, new footpaths and dedicated bicycle lanes, landscaping with medium to large trees down the median strips, outdoor dining zones, a realignment of Harbour Drive itself, and new traffic lights at the Harbour Drive, Orlando Street and Marina Drive intersection.
City Planning and Communities Director Ian Fitzgibbon said the plan “focuses on road and active transport links – but these are needed to cater for the development anticipated.”
Acting Mayor George Cecato said the scale of what’s coming to the precinct made the funding plan urgent.
“There’s about half-a-billion dollars worth of development – by private companies and for government sites – touted for the Jetty Strip precinct so we’re cracking on to get the upgrade happening,” Acting Mayor Cecato said.
