Pelican Boardwalk extension completed at Forster

Pelican Boardwalk

The latest section of the Pelican Boardwalk on Memorial Drive, Forster, has been completed, providing locals and visitors with more space to enjoy the popular waterfront destination.

The new 80-metre over-water extension continues the boardwalk east towards the Red Spot Boatshed and builds on recently completed improvements along the Forster foreshore.

The extension improves access, safety and amenity along the Forster Tuncurry Foreshore Walk.

“The Pelican Boardwalk is a much-loved part of the Forster waterfront and this extension gives the community more opportunity to enjoy Wallis Lake with an over-water vantage point,” said MidCoast Council Executive Manager Public Spaces Liam Bulley.

“It has been great to see locals and visitors making the most of the first stage of the extended boardwalk and kayak launching platform over recent months. The further 80-metre extension provides another high-quality public space for people of all ages and abilities.”

The latest works included construction of the suspended boardwalk section and infrastructure to accommodate a future public marine effluent pump-out facility, helping to protect local waterways. Interpretive signage highlighting the area’s cultural, ecological and historical significance will be installed over the coming months.

The project forms part of ongoing improvements to marine facilities and the Forster Tuncurry Foreshore Walk.

Recent upgrades along this section of the foreshore include:

  • replacement of deteriorated timber decking
  • a 120-metre suspended boardwalk
  • a new low-level landing providing improved access for swimming and paddleboarding
  • a kayak launching system
  • signage explaining the cultural significance of the site, the ecological values of the waterways, and the history of the area.

“This project is about supporting recreation, tourism and local business. At the same time, it’s improving safe and accessible connections along our foreshore,” Bulley said.

The project was jointly funded through the NSW Government’s Regional Tourism Activation Fund Round 2 and a Council co-contribution via Forster Development Contributions.
