A 2,000 hectare hazard reduction burn is planned for Guy Fawkes River National Park this week, with tracks and trails in the burn area to close for the duration.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service will carry out the burn on Tuesday, 1 September and Wednesday, 2 September, weather permitting. All tracks and trails within the burn area, including informal routes, will be closed for the duration, reopening only once they have been assessed as safe.
People with asthma or other respiratory problems are being told to keep clear of the area, or stay indoors, close windows and doors, and follow their health plan if smoke moves through.
The burn is one of many hazard reduction operations NPWS carries out across NSW each year, often with help from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW, aimed at cutting bushfire fuel loads to protect the park, its natural and cultural values, and neighbouring communities from summer bushfires.
People with known health conditions can sign up for air quality reports, forecasts and alerts by email or SMS from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
