Construction has started on an 80-unit social housing development in Tweed Heads, the NSW Government’s largest housing project in the Northern Rivers since the 2022 floods.
The development is part of the government’s $150 million Northern Rivers Flood Recovery Program, which is delivering 224 additional homes across the region.
Housing and Homelessness Minister Rose Jackson said the program was helping provide secure housing for older residents affected by the region’s housing pressures and flood recovery.
“We’re delivering on our promise to the Northern Rivers, building more than 200 new homes for older people who deserve a safe and secure place to live in the community they call home,” said Jackson.
“This region is still healing after the 2022 floods, and providing new, fit-for-purpose social housing is about more than bricks and mortar, it’s about restoring stability, giving people security, dignity and a fresh start.”
The Tweed Heads development will provide housing for up to 135 people, with a focus on older residents looking to downsize from larger family homes.
It will include 46 one-bedroom and 34 two-bedroom units, along with parking and a ground-floor community room.
The homes will be accessible and energy efficient, with the development close to public transport and within walking distance of shops, restaurants and parks.
Recovery and North Coast Minister Janelle Saffin said the project represented a significant investment in the community.
“We’re delivering real, progress for Tweed Heads with our largest housing investment since the 2022 flood,” said Saffin.
“Building 80 modern units in the heart of town puts our seniors close to local shops, transit, and care, and creating 250 local jobs for our regional economy. This is what practical; long-term recovery looks like.”
Construction is expected to take about two years and support more than 250 jobs.
The project forms part of the NSW Government’s broader $6.6 billion social housing investment, which is expected to deliver 8,400 new social homes across the state.
Jackson said the new housing was part of the wider recovery effort across the Northern Rivers.
“Across the Northern Rivers, we’re delivering new homes to support communities recovering from the floods. These homes are a vital step in helping local families rebuild their lives.”
