A new CCTV network will be rolled out across Ballina and Lennox Head in a bid to improve community safety, deter crime and assist police investigations.
Ballina Shire Council has secured $1 million from the Australian Government’s Strengthening Community Safety – Election Commitment Funding program for the project.
CCTV cameras and supporting communications infrastructure will be installed at priority locations across the two communities, allowing improved monitoring of public spaces.
NSW Police will have access to the network to assist with operational responses and investigations.
Ballina Shire Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the project would complement the council’s broader efforts to improve community safety.
“Everyone should feel safe and confident when they are out and about in our town centres and public spaces, and this project is another way we can work with NSW Police and our other partners to support that,” Cadwallader said.
“CCTV can play an important role in deterring crime and anti-social behaviour, while also providing valuable information to police when incidents do occur.
“We know community safety matters to our residents, businesses and visitors, and this investment will give us another tool to help create safer and more welcoming public spaces.”
The network will use a combination of camera technology at priority locations, supported by communications infrastructure and a centralised video management system.
Preliminary work is underway, with further work continuing across the Ballina CBD.
Installation will be staged, with the timing and locations of future work still being finalised.
The council said the network would be managed in accordance with relevant privacy requirements, including controls governing access to footage and how recordings are stored and managed.
