Two North Coast destinations are going head-to-head for the title of NSW’s Top Tourism Town, with both Coffs Harbour and Ballina named as finalists in this year’s awards.
Voting is now open for the statewide program, which recognises destinations that deliver outstanding visitor experiences while supporting local businesses, jobs and communities.
Coffs Harbour’s inclusion highlights its reputation as one of the state’s most popular destinations, known for its beaches, hinterland, events and lifestyle appeal.
City of Coffs Harbour Mayor Nikki Williams said the nomination reflected both the region’s natural beauty and the people behind its tourism offering.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase everything that makes Coffs Harbour such a special place to visit and live,” she said.
“Our community plays a big part in creating that experience — from our local businesses and tourism operators to the people who proudly call this place home.”
The Coffs Coast has also been recognised as NSW’s first certified ECO Destination, reinforcing its position as a leader in sustainable tourism. Tourism contributes significantly to the local economy, with more than $1 billion spent by visitors in the 2024–25 financial year and close to 10 per cent of jobs linked to the sector.
Tourist favourite Ballina is also making its case, with its submission highlighting the region’s diverse offering across both coast and hinterland, as well as its strong local identity and visitor economy.
Ballina Shire Council’s Destination and Economy Coordinator Alanah Ward said community support would be key to success.
“Ballina has so much to be proud of, and this is a great opportunity to recognise the people, businesses and experiences that make our destination so special,” she said.
“The Top Tourism Town Awards are a chance to showcase Ballina on a broader stage and highlight the strength of our visitor economy.”
Other finalists in the competition include Forbes, Kiama, Moree, Orange, Shellharbour and Wollongong.
Both beloved tourist destinations are now calling on locals and visitors to get behind their campaigns, with the final result to be determined through a combination of public voting and industry judging.
Voting is open until Sunday 3 May, with community support expected to play a decisive role in which destination takes out the top honour. Vote here.
