Lismore City Council has been recognised for its achievements in environmental leadership, resilience and community infrastructure at the 2026 LG Professionals NSW Local Government Excellence Awards.

The awards are among the state’s highest honours for innovation and excellence in local government.

Council won the Environmental Leadership Award for its Rural Landholder Initiative, received a Highly Commended recognition in the Special Project Initiative category for its Flood Restoration Portfolio, and was named a finalist in the Asset and Infrastructure Projects Over $1.5 Million category for the Lismore Skatepark.

Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg said the recognition reflected the dedication, expertise and passion of council staff in delivering meaningful outcomes for the community.

“These awards highlight the breadth of work being undertaken across our organisation – from protecting and restoring our natural environment, to leading one of the largest disaster recovery programs in local government, and delivering infrastructure that enhances community wellbeing,” Krieg said.

The award-winning Rural Landholder Initiative is the result of more than a decade of collaboration with local landholders to improve environmental outcomes across the Lismore local government area.

Since 2015, the program has supported projects on more than 250 rural properties, facilitated the planting of more than 50,000 native trees, provided weed control across 380 hectares and delivered 6.5 kilometres of riparian restoration.

Council said the program had helped protect biodiversity, restore waterways and strengthen partnerships with the community.

Recognition across three award categories reflects the breadth of work being delivered by council and its partners, highlighting a commitment to innovation, collaboration and positive outcomes for the Lismore community.

Council congratulated staff, community members and project partners involved in the recognised initiatives, as well as other local government organisations acknowledged at the awards.
