A fisherman is believed to have been swept to his death from rocks at Evans Head on Sunday morning, with his body found floating 300 metres from the headland.

The call for help came from Razorback Lookout just after 11am on Sunday, 14 June, after people at the lookout had spotted a man’s body in the water.

Officers from the Richmond Police District attended alongside Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW and NSW Ambulance paramedics. An Evans Head Surf Club boat crew of eight members also responded to the call.

“A male in his 40s was found in the water,” said a spokesperson from Surf Life Saving Far North Coast.

“Assistance was provided but unfortunately he was declared deceased.”

Unattended fishing gear found in the area led authorities to believe the man had been rock fishing near the Evans Head headland when he entered the water.

An investigation is underway and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.

The Evans Head area is not one of the designated rock fishing areas where safety gear including a lifejacket is required by law.

An investigation is underway and a report is being prepared for the Coroner.

The death comes weeks after a 32-year-old East Timorese man was swept from rocks at Emerald Beach headland.

An extensive multi-agency search involving Water Police, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Marine Rescue NSW volunteers was launched, but the man was never found. The formal search was suspended after three days with the man presumed dead.
