A 34-year-old man faced court today after an alleged police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle at Tweed Heads yesterday morning.
Police allege that about 9.10am on Monday, June 15, officers attempted to stop a red Holden Commodore in the car park of a shopping centre on Minjungbal Drive, Tweed Heads South.
Inquiries had allegedly revealed the vehicle had been stolen from a Tweed Heads home overnight.
When the driver allegedly failed to stop as directed, police initiated a pursuit.
The pursuit continued for a short time before it was terminated due to safety concerns.
A short time later, police were informed the Commodore had allegedly crashed into a truck and trailer on the M1.
No injuries were reported. Police allege the driver left the scene, prompting further inquiries.
About 1pm, officers attended the same shopping centre and arrested a 34-year-old Chinderah man.
He was taken to Tweed Heads Police Station and charged with:
- Police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously
- Drive while licence cancelled
- Take and drive conveyance without consent of owner
- Drive recklessly/furiously or speed/manner dangerous
- Not give particulars to other driver
- Destroy or damage property
The man was refused bail and is scheduled to appear before Bail Division Court 1 today, Tuesday, June 16.
