Young innovators pitch community-changing ideas to Ballina Council

students pitch to councillors at council chambers

Students from Ballina Coast High School and Richmond Christian College have presented a range of community-focused projects to Ballina Shire councillors as part of the 2026 Youth Week program.

The students pitched ideas aimed at addressing local challenges and improving community wellbeing, including an underwater drone to monitor waterways and support disaster preparedness, a Clean Clothes Kit initiative for people experiencing homelessness, early career support programs for younger students, and a dedicated youth centre for Ballina.

The presentations gave students the opportunity to share their ideas directly with elected representatives while developing skills in public speaking, project planning and civic participation.

Ballina Shire Council Social and Community Development Officer Kiara Williams said the quality of the ideas and the commitment shown by the students was inspiring.

“The students demonstrated incredible creativity, insight and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in their community,” Williams said.

“What stood out was not only the strength of the ideas, but the passion behind them. These young people have identified real issues, thought carefully about potential solutions and shown a willingness to take action.

“Programs like this help empower young people to see that their voices matter and that they can play an active role in shaping the future of Ballina Shire.”

The presentations also marked the next stage of the program, with students progressing to the Ideas2Life initiative.

Through mentoring, coaching and practical support, participants will further develop their concepts and explore opportunities to bring them to life.

Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said it was encouraging to see young people engaging with community issues and developing practical solutions.

“It was a privilege to hear directly from these students and learn about the ideas they are passionate about,” Cadwallader said.

“Our young people bring fresh perspectives, innovative thinking and a strong sense of community. Their ideas demonstrate a genuine commitment to making Ballina Shire an even better place to live.

“Council is proud to support initiatives that encourage youth leadership, participation and innovation.”

The Youth Week initiative highlights the role young people play in shaping the future of the Ballina Shire community while providing opportunities for emerging leaders, innovators and changemakers to develop and advance their ideas.
