Motorists travelling across the Mid North Coast and North Coast during the winter school holidays are being urged to plan ahead, take extra care and drive to the conditions.
With the holidays underway, Transport for NSW is expecting increased traffic on major routes, including the Pacific Highway at Coffs Harbour and the Pacific Motorway at Tugun heading into Queensland, as families head away for winter breaks.
Transport for NSW Executive Director Rob Austin said drivers should be prepared for busy conditions and changing weather.
“Just as we ask motorists all the time before jumping in the car—plan ahead and drive to the conditions with parts of the State expecting severe weather. Slow down, maintain safe following distances, and always use headlights,” Austin said.
Motorists travelling inland or to the Snowy Mountains are also reminded to prepare for alpine conditions.
“Despite the lack of snow to date, we especially want people to take extra care if travelling through the alpine region—carry and fit snow chains as a precaution as roads can still be icy, while some snow and fog can make it harder to see.
“If you are heading to Sydney Airport, give yourself extra travel time and consider taking the train to avoid traffic near the terminals. If you must drive and plan to leave your car at the airport, pre-book parking ahead of time,” Austin said.
