A woman has suffered critical burns after a house fire in Coffs Harbour, while her brother was treated for burns and smoke inhalation after escaping the blaze.
Emergency services were called to a home on Prince James Avenue about 10:30 pm on Friday, where they found the split-level house fully engulfed in flames.
Two police officers entered the house through the laundry and rescued a 55-year-old woman, dragging her to safety. She was taken to Coffs Harbour Base Hospital before being airlifted to John Hunter Hospital. Police said she remains in a critical but stable condition.
The woman’s 57-year-old brother managed to escape the burning home. He was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus with burns to his feet and smoke inhalation.
Police believe the fire may have started accidentally in a bedroom, but the cause has not been determined. Specialist investigators from the NSW Police Force and Fire and Rescue NSW will examine the scene.
Investigations are continuing.
