Maclean High School teacher Liza Hamilton has been recognised as one of only nine recipients across the state to receive the prestigious NSW Secretary Award for Excellent Service at the 2026 NSW Public Education Awards, held in Sydney last night.
State Nationals MP for Clarence Richie Williamson announced the honour, with Mrs Hamilton receiving the award from NSW Department of Education Secretary Murat Dizdar in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Maclean High School, its students and the broader community.
Mr Williamson said being recognised as one of only nine recipients across New South Wales was an extraordinary achievement and reflected Mrs Hamilton’s dedication to public education.
“To be recognised as one of only nine recipients from across the state is an incredible achievement and a testament to Liza’s passion, commitment and the positive impact she has made throughout her career,” Mr Williamson said.
Mr Williamson said it was a privilege to welcome Mrs Hamilton and Maclean High School Principal James Witchard to NSW Parliament on Monday ahead of the awards ceremony.
“It was a great honour to host Liza and James at Parliament House before the awards, and I was delighted to see Liza receive this well-deserved recognition later that evening,” Mr Williamson said.
“Liza has been widely recognised for her leadership in Aboriginal education across the NSW North Coast. Through her expertise in community engagement and strong partnerships with local Elders, she has established long-running cultural celebrations that have helped transform the culture of Maclean High School,” Mr Williamson said.
“She has consistently gone above and beyond the expectations of her role, creating opportunities for students through interstate and overseas experiences, on Country learning programs and community events that broaden students’ understanding of culture, community and the wider world,” Mr Williamson said.
Mr Williamson said Mrs Hamilton’s achievements reflected the outstanding quality of teachers working in regional public schools.
“Liza’s commitment to her students, her school and the wider community is truly inspiring. She has enriched the lives of countless young people throughout her career, and this recognition is richly deserved,” Mr Williamson said.
“I congratulate Liza on this outstanding achievement and also congratulate the entire Maclean High School community on this well-deserved honour,” Mr Williamson said.
