Last Chance for young Mid North Coast entrepreneurs to land a Launch Pad place

Applications for round two of the Launch Pad Youth Entrepreneur program slam shut this Monday, 24 August, and the Mid North Coast’s three councils are urging young business owners not to miss their shot at a free 10-week bootcamp that has already turned local side hustles into real businesses.

One graduate of round one is Kempsey’s Paris, who has since opened Sol Wellness Studio in Centrepoint Arcade, offering pregnancy and post-partum massage and bodywork.

“As a young business owner, you really do have to wear all the hats,” Paris said.

“My skill is what people come for, but running a business means understanding accounting, tax, insurance, marketing and social media. Knowing how to use these tools is the difference between staying in business or burning out.”

“Launch Pad has been great because it gives you a space with people your own age who are facing the same challenges.”

“You learn from Julie and from each other, and you don’t feel so alone.”

Eleven young business owners took part in round one, three from Kempsey, four from Nambucca and four from Port Macquarie. The cohort ran a pop-up store at Kempsey Central on Monday, 25 May, before pitching their businesses at a final celebration at the Slim Dusty Centre on Thursday, 4 June, where mini-grants were handed out and participant businesses were showcased.

Program facilitator Julie Humphris said pitching was a particular focus.

“Pitching can feel daunting, but it’s really about being clear on your message and understanding your audience,” Ms Humphris said.

“We help participants prepare for questions, align their ideas with local priorities and clearly communicate their value.”

Now round two is open, offering 15 places to young people aged 18 to 30 with a business idea or an existing venture in need of direction. The free program runs for 10 weeks of guided support and in-person workshops, with selection based on an applicant’s readiness.

Nambucca Valley Mayor Gary Lee said round one had proven its worth.

“The first Launch Pad Youth Entrepreneur program delivered by local business expert, Julie Humphris, was sought after and it helped local youth gain hands-on business assistance,” he said.

“Our Council is again supporting this program, along with other partners including Kempsey Shire Council and Port Macquarie Hastings Council, because it helps to strengthen our local business community for the future.

“A key message we heard during the lengthy Community Strategic Plan process over 2024-25 was our community would like to see greater opportunities for young people in our valley and this practical program provides this for entrepreneurs and big thinkers.”

Ms Humphris said the program was designed to be practical, supportive and human.

“Participants in Launch Pad Round 1 found it truly helpful and inspiring to gain some space to think and access trusted guidance,” she said.

“Launch Pad creates that environment, where participants can make real progress with support around them.

“So get your application in by 24 August if you can commit to the 10-week program and be ready to start with like-minded youth on 1 September 2026.”
