A man has died and a woman has been seriously injured after their car crashed into a tree at Zara, west of Murwillumbah, on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to Zara Road, near Rawsons Road, at about 9.50am on Thursday, 24 September, after reports a hatchback had hit a tree.
The accident happened near Chillingham, about 18km west of Murwillumbah.
Officers from Tweed-Byron Police District and NSW Ambulance paramedics attended.
Paramedics treated the driver, a man believed to be in his 80s, but he died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified.
His passenger, a 66-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries. She was treated by paramedics before being taken to hospital in a serious condition.
Police established a crime scene and have begun an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
The vehicle has been seized for forensic examination.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
