Ballina Shire Council will spend $4.3 million upgrading the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre to reduce queues and make the facility safer and easier to use.
The upgrade will include a second weighbridge, a covered weighbridge structure, additional space for the salvage store and improved staff amenities.
Council says the second weighbridge will allow vehicles to move through the centre more efficiently, reducing congestion and waiting times, particularly during busy periods.
Ballina Shire Council Asset Management and Resource Recovery Manager Lloyd Isaacson said the project would improve the experience for customers while creating a safer and more efficient facility.
“This is a significant investment in a facility our community relies on every day, and these upgrades will make a real difference to the customer experience,” Isaacson said.
“The second weighbridge will help us process vehicles more efficiently, reduce congestion and get customers on their way sooner.
“We know there will be some short-term inconvenience while construction is underway, but the end result will be a safer, faster and more user-friendly facility that will better serve our community into the future.”
Construction is expected to begin on 19 October and be completed by April 2027, subject to weather and site conditions.
The Resource Recovery Centre will remain open throughout construction, although customers have been warned to expect some delays and changes to traffic conditions within the site.
Visitors are encouraged to allow extra time and follow directions from staff while work is underway.
The Salvage Shed will remain open and will not be affected by the project.
