More than $11 million has been invested in parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities across the MidCoast over the past three years, delivering upgrades to popular community spaces.
MidCoast Council has completed or partially completed 73 actions under its Open Space and Recreation Strategy since its adoption three years ago.
The completed projects represent an investment of $11.33 million, including more than $9.13 million in external funding and $2.2 million contributed by Council.
Major improvements include the Black Head Skatepark, Forster Pelican Boardwalk extension, Tea Gardens Boat Ramp upgrade and Gloucester Billabong Park Suspension Bridge, alongside playground renewals and other recreational upgrades.
Council’s executive manager of public spaces, Liam Bulley, said the projects reflected community priorities.
“We are proud to deliver projects that the community have told us they need and can enjoy for years to come,” said Bulley.
Council has also partnered with community groups to improve local facilities, including upgrades to sports courts and the development of new fenced off-leash dog areas.
Planning is also underway to guide future recreational development, with master plans completed for Taree Recreation Grounds, Old Bar Park and Wingham Central Park.
The Open Space and Recreation Strategy outlines the future development and management of parks, sports fields, playgrounds, dog parks, foreshores, walkways, cycleways and other public spaces across the MidCoast until 2035.
It is supported by individual plans covering playgrounds, skateparks, outdoor sports courts, sports lighting, boating infrastructure, public toilets, walking and cycling networks, trails and aquatic facilities.
A further 22 actions have been completed under these supporting plans, representing an additional investment of more than $2.15 million.
Of that amount, approximately $1.29 million came from external funding, while Council contributed more than $864,000.
Combined, the completed projects under the strategy and its supporting plans represent an investment of approximately $13.49 million in outdoor and recreational infrastructure across the region.
Residents can explore completed projects and future plans through Council’s Have Your Say website.
