Red alert issued for Lake Ainsworth

WaterNSW has issued a red alert for high levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae at Lake Ainsworth in Lennox Head, following sampling conducted by Ballina Shire Council.

The alert applies only to untreated water at the site and will remain in place until further testing confirms the risk has subsided. Residents and visitors are advised to avoid recreational activities such as swimming, water skiing, canoeing or any other activity that brings them into contact with the lake.

WaterNSW warned that potentially toxic blue-green algae can cause gastroenteritis if ingested, while contact with contaminated water may lead to skin and eye irritation. Ingesting water containing algal toxins can also result in liver damage and other health problems.

People who suspect they have been affected are urged to seek medical advice. WaterNSW also advises against eating mussels or crayfish from affected areas and recommends caution when consuming fin fish. Fish caught in red alert zones should be thoroughly cleaned in uncontaminated water, with internal organs discarded. Avoiding fishing altogether during a bloom is considered the safest option.

Blue-green algae occur naturally and can reproduce rapidly in still or slow-flowing water when there is ample sunlight and sufficient nutrients.

Residents can visit Ballina Shire Council’s website for updates on how blue-green algae risks are being managed in nearby treated water supplies.
