Singh backs fair pay for community preschool teachers

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh is calling on the Minns Labor Government to increase funding for community preschools, warning that low wages are causing a staffing crisis across the early childhood sector.

Mr Singh said he supports the campaign for greater state investment to boost wages for early childhood teachers, who are currently paid up to 30 per cent less than teachers in other education sectors despite having the same qualifications.

“This is simply unfair and is creating a staffing crisis in our community preschools,” Mr Singh said.

“Our educators deserve better and our children deserve stability and quality in their early education. The Government’s refusal to adequately fund this important sector places the future of community preschools and quality education at risk.”

Mr Singh said the issue affects both educators and families across regional NSW. “Every child should have access to passionate, qualified educators, and I will continue to advocate for the support our preschools need,” he said.

“These preschools are more than places of learning – they’re a vital part of our children’s lives and the heart of our community. I urge the Minns Labor Government to fund community preschools fairly so they can pay our incredible teachers and educators what they truly deserve.”

The call follows ongoing advocacy from early childhood directors, including those at the Lower Bucca Community Preschool, who say low wages and workforce shortages are threatening the future of community-based centres in the Coffs Harbour region.
