BALLINA SHIRE: There is still time to recognise the local legends who make the community shine, with nominations for the 2026 Ballina Shire Australia Day Awards now extended until Friday 7 November.

Ballina Shire Council has announced the extension to give residents more opportunity to celebrate those whose contributions make a difference across the region.

Mayor Sharon Cadwallader said the awards honour the individuals and groups who embody the spirit of the community.

“What stands out about our nominees is not only what they achieve, but the way they lift others up and inspire positive change,” Cr Cadwallader said.
“These awards celebrate both remarkable individuals and groups whose ongoing commitment helps shape a stronger, more connected community.”

Categories for this year’s awards include:

• Young Citizen of the Year (30 years or under)
• Senior Citizen of the Year (60 years or over)
• Volunteer Award (individual or group)
• Sports Award (individual, team, coach or administrator)
• Arts and Culture Award (individual or group)
• Environmental Award (individual or group)
• Community Event of the Year (event held during 2025)

The overall 2026 Citizen of the Year will be selected from among all nominees.

The awards will be presented during a ceremony on Australia Day, Monday 26 January 2026, at the Lennox Head Cultural Centre, where the community will come together to celebrate the achievements of local heroes.
