Fatal shark attack on Mid North Coast

A woman has died and a man remains in hospital following a shark attack at Crowdy Bay on the New South Wales Mid North Coast.

Emergency services were called to the beach around 6.30am on Thursday, 27 November, after reports that two people had been bitten by a shark.

Bystanders assisted the pair before the arrival of paramedics. Despite efforts to save her, the woman died at the scene. She is yet to be formally identified but is believed to be 25 years old.

A 26-year-old man sustained serious injuries to his leg and was airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. He remains in a serious but stable condition.

The pair are believed to be visiting from Switzerland.

Police from the Manning/Great Lakes Police District are investigating the incident in consultation with shark experts from the Department of Primary Industries, who are working to identify the species involved.

Crowdy Bay beach has been closed, along with other beaches between Camden Haven and Crowdy Bay, as a precaution.

A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
