New Ballina pump track to officially open

Ballina Shire’s newest recreational facility, a national competition-standard pump track, will officially open next week, offering a dynamic new space for riders of all ages and skill levels.

The official opening event will be held on Wednesday 17 December at 10am at Kingsford Smith Reserve, Ballina. Community members are invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony, hear from key stakeholders, and see the new facility in action.

What to Expect at the Opening

The event will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, speeches from project leaders and community representatives and a chance to explore the new facilities.

“This new facility is a great example of how we’re creating vibrant, inclusive spaces for our community,” said Mayor Sharon Cadwallader.

“It’s been designed with input from local riders, and we’re proud to offer a space that meets both community needs and professional competition standards.”

About the Project

The southern section of Kingsford Smith Reserve has been transformed into a premier riding precinct, supported by $733,345 in funding from the NSW Government.

Delivered in partnership with Boyds Bay Group and internationally renowned builders Velo Solutions, the project features:

  • A competition-level pump track
  • A junior track and advanced alternate line
  • Trackside viewing areas for spectators and participants
  • Bike-friendly amenities including shelters, seating, bike racks, water fountains, and a workstation
  • Landscaping with shade trees and stormwater management to support environmental sustainability

The pump track is designed to allow riders to maintain speed through body movement, or “pumping”, rather than pedalling – offering a fun and challenging experience for BMX, MTB, and scooter riders alike.

Ballina Shire Council has additional upgrades planned for the site, including a new dedicated car park and improved access. These works are expected to be completed later in the 2025–26 financial year.
