The transformation of playgrounds across the Coffs Coast is continuing, with the small hinterland community of Ulong celebrating the official opening of a new BMX track alongside upgraded climbing equipment and slides.
The dual projects have taken shape in Ulong, a community of about 215 people in the Coffs Coast hinterland.
The BMX facility, named Mountain Mad Wheels, was officially opened this week and is being hailed as an example of collaboration between community groups and local government.
The project began in 2024 when the Eastern Dorrigo Community Hall & Showground Facility Management Committee secured a $21,723 City of Coffs Harbour Community Infrastructure Renewal Grant.
The funding enabled a full upgrade of the former BMX track. A professional track builder was engaged, with the local management committee overseeing the works.
Additional fundraising and donations from residents funded new signage and vegetation clearing around the course.
“Projects like this really show what’s possible when a passionate local committee, the community and Council work together,” Mayor Nikki Williams said at the opening.
“It’s a track that’s fun, challenging and designed to build skills, confidence and well-being for all ages.”
The nearby playground has also been redeveloped, with local families contributing to the design process. The result is a multi-skill play space aimed at a broader age range than the previous equipment.
“The previous infrastructure was quite limited and used mostly by only very young kids, whereas the new build should be a drawcard for toddlers to teens,” City Planning and Communities Director Ian Fitzgibbon said.
“It’s great to see Ulong getting a fresh playground on the back of similar initiatives at Emerald Beach, Sawtell – and watch this space as we build a destination playground at Park Beach.”
Mayor Williams said playground upgrades across the Local Government Area had been a focus, with councillors conducting inspections of facilities in early 2025.
“These spaces are about more than just recreation. They’re about connection, health, and belonging – giving people places to be active, to challenge themselves, and to enjoy being outdoors with friends and family,” Mayor Williams said.
