Motorists across the Mid North Coast are being urged to take extra care on the roads, with double demerit penalties in effect from 12.01am on Friday, 5 June, until 11.59pm on Monday, 8 June, for the King’s Birthday long weekend.
Member for Myall Lakes Tanya Thompson urged drivers to follow the road rules while travelling.
“Long weekends are one of the busiest times on our roads and many people will be travelling to see loved ones and enjoying the long weekend, please remain vigilant on the roads and stick to the sign-posted speed limit,” Thompson said.
“Higher fines and double demerit points will apply for those offences committed such as speeding, not wearing a seatbelt, driving under the influence or using a mobile phone illegally.”
Shadow Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said thousands of families were expected to hit the road over the long weekend.
“Drivers should expect heavier traffic, longer travel times and ongoing disruptions in some areas which makes patience and caution more important than ever,” Toole said.
“Police will be out in force this long weekend so don’t let a moment of stupidity cause a lifetime of regret.”
Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Transport and Roads Robert Dwyer said the message was clear.
“Double demerits aren’t just a warning they are a reminder that one bad decision behind the wheel can change lives forever. Motorists are being urged to plan ahead, allow extra travel, check conditions before leaving and be patient on the road.”
