New handrails are improving access to the greens at Sawtell Bowling and Recreation Club after the club secured $4,000 through the NSW Government’s Local Sport Grant Program.

Member for Coffs Harbour Gurmesh Singh visited the club to mark the completion of its Hand Rails for Greens Access project, which aims to improve accessibility and encourage greater participation in lawn bowls.

The project involved the installation of 16 handrails to make it easier for bowlers to step on and off the greens.

“I congratulate Sawtell Bowling and Recreation Club on the completion of their project, which has been warmly welcomed by everyone at the club,” Singh said.

“The new handrails are helping to further grow participation in this booming sport – it will keep existing lawn bowlers in the game, while encouraging others who may have felt hindered by mobility issues to become involved.

“This is a fine example of the Local Sport Grant Program in play – it’s making a big difference to our community sports organisations across the Coffs Coast.”

Sawtell Bowling and Recreation Club secretary-manager Richard Hinton said the funding had enabled the club to deliver an important accessibility upgrade.

“The $4000 grant was important for our club, because it enabled us to finally go ahead with providing improved access for our lawn bowlers,” Hinton said.

“We have a new leadership team at Sawtell Bowling and Recreation Club – we’re all focused on growing the club while at the same time keeping it at the very heart of our local community.”
