Lismore Transit Centre bathrooms will reopen this week following extensive repairs and refurbishment after repeated vandalism.
Lismore City Council says $19,300 has been spent repairing vandalism at the facility across the 2025/26 and 2026/27 financial years to date.
Total maintenance, repair and operational costs for the Transit Centre over that period have reached $34,000.
Council Director of Water, Waste and Open Spaces Matt Potter said reopening the bathrooms would restore an important public amenity for people using the Transit Centre and surrounding CBD.
“We know the closure of the bathrooms has been frustrating for people using the Transit Centre, and this closure has placed pressure on surrounding businesses,” Potter said.
“Council has invested significantly in repairing the facilities, and we want to keep them open and available to the community.
“If you see antisocial behaviour or vandalism at the Transit Centre, we ask you to report it to NSW Police. Reporting incidents when they occur helps police respond to issues and identify where further action is needed.”
Repairs included graffiti removal, repainting, floor resurfacing, roof cleaning, electrical and lighting upgrades and a comprehensive clean of surrounding outdoor areas.
Additional measures are being introduced to deter vandalism and antisocial behaviour, including Alcohol-Free Zone signage, extra lighting throughout the night, increased council ranger patrols and onsite security during peak transit periods.
Council said it would continue working with NSW Police to monitor the area and respond to incidents.
Work is also continuing on the future activation of the Transit Centre, with a tender process underway for a potential building tenant.
The bathrooms will be open daily from 6am to 7pm.
Onsite security will operate during peak periods from 6am to 9am and 3pm to 6pm.
