A multimillion-dollar sewer upgrade is about to start in Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest, and it includes boring a new pipe under the Myall River.
The MidCoast Council project will see a new rising main built between Tea Gardens and the Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plant, including an underbore at the Myall River.
Several sewer pump stations in Tea Gardens will also be upgraded. A smaller rising main will be installed between Port Way and Spinifex Avenue, and an asbestos sewer main on the Singing Bridge will be replaced with a new ductile iron pipe.
“In the immediate future, the project is going to relieve pressure on the network and reduce the risk of sewer overflows occurring during wet weather events, which is really important,” said MidCoast Council Director of Infrastructure and Engineering Services Rob Scott.
“Looking ahead, it’s also going to increase the capacity of the network, which means the population in the area can grow without putting increased pressure on our infrastructure.”
Work will begin this month at two sites at the same time: on Mungo Brush Road at the entrance to the Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plant, and in the Myall Quays Boulevard and Shoreline Drive area of Tea Gardens.
Building the new rising main on the Hawks Nest side of the river is expected to take around five months.
Work will then move to the underbore of the Myall River, expected to start in early February 2027.
The project is expected to be finished by early 2028.
Residents and businesses will be told about localised impacts as the work progresses.
The upgrade adds to Council’s investment in local sewer infrastructure, with the Hawks Nest Sewage Treatment Plant upgrade on track to be finished by mid-2027.
