The Bellingen Shire has scored a Natural Disaster Declaration that will provide some relief to businesses in Dorrigo, Thora, and Bellingen, battered by the Waterfall Way closure.
The Bellingen Shire Council said the declaration activates disaster recovery support for the community, including low-interest loans, freight and transport assistance for businesses and primary producers, and grants and concessional loans for community and sporting organisations.
Mayor Steve Allan said it also confirmed the commitment to funding the rehabilitation of Waterfall Way.
“We know the disruption caused by the Gordonville Cutting landslip on Waterfall Way has had a real impact across our community,” Mayor Allan said.
“Council has received countless emails and phone calls from business owners and residents who are worried about safety, viability, reduced visitor numbers, and the ongoing uncertainty this closure has created.”
“Behind every small business is a local family, staff, and livelihoods, so we understand just how stressful this period has been for many people.”
Mr Allan said council’s top priority remains restoring safe access along Waterfall Way.
“We’re working closely with Transport for NSW to help get the road reopened as quickly and safely as possible while continuing to advocate for longer-term solutions for the corridor.”
“Our advocacy will not stop until the larger projects of a complete upgrade of Summervilles Road and full corridor assessment of Waterfall Way and surrounding routes are planned, funded, and implemented.”
“In the meantime, our towns are open for business. Bellingen and Dorrigo are both accessible, and our local businesses really need community and visitor support. We’re encouraging people to plan a trip, spend some time in our townships, and support local businesses while we work through this challenging period together.”
