A woman has been refused bail after allegedly firing a pistol at police out the window of her car during a dramatic 20km pursuit south of Grafton overnight.
Police first stopped a Mitsubishi Lancer on Mulgi Drive at South Grafton about 8.50pm on Tuesday, March 10.
During the roadside stop, officers allegedly located and seized a small amount of ammunition and a knife from the vehicle.
The driver, a 31-year-old learner, was issued a future court attendance notice for possess or use a prohibited weapon without permit, possess ammunition without holding licence, permit or authority, and learner not accompanied by driver, police officer or tester. Her learner’s permit was also suspended.
Less than an hour later, about 9.45pm, police allegedly spotted the same woman driving the same vehicle near the intersection of Old Lily Pool Road and Armidale Road at South Grafton.
When officers directed the driver to stop, police say she failed to comply and a pursuit began.
The pursuit travelled along Armidale Road before continuing onto Orana Way, where the woman allegedly fired several shots from the Mitsubishi.
No officers were injured and no vehicles were damaged.
Police continued to follow the vehicle before it stopped on Orana Way, where the driver exited the car and allegedly climbed onto the roof.
Officers allege she then pointed a pistol at police and at herself while they attempted to speak with her.
She then allegedly got back into the vehicle and drove away again.
Police followed the car to a home on Gumtree Road at Lanitza, where the driver allegedly drove through a gate before stopping.
Police allege the woman again climbed onto the car and pointed the pistol at officers and herself while they attempted to negotiate with her.
She then allegedly jumped from the vehicle and attempted to break into the home before being arrested.
During the arrest, officers seized the pistol, which will undergo forensic examination.
The woman was taken to Grafton Police Station and charged with multiple charges including drivign with a suspended license, failing to stop in the police pursuit, destroy or damage property (DV), discharge firearm with intent to resist arrest, aggravated break and enter with intent while armed with a dangerous weapon, and use unregistered firearm.
She was refused bail and appeared before Bail Division Local Court 1 on Wednesday, March 11.
