Community urged to recognise local volunteers during National Volunteer Week

Communities across the Myall Lakes are being encouraged to recognise and celebrate the volunteers who help keep towns connected, supported and resilient during National Volunteer Week and WOW Day (Wear Orange Wednesday).

Member for Myall Lakes Tanya Thompson said the week was an opportunity for the community to acknowledge the contribution volunteers make every day, particularly following the challenges faced during the 2025 floods.

“This National Volunteer Week and WOW Day, I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank the volunteers who help make the Myall Lakes electorate such a strong and connected community,” Thompson said.

The commemorations coincide with the anniversary of the devastating flood event that impacted communities across the region in 2025, with many local volunteers playing a key role in emergency response and recovery efforts.

“Across the Myall Lakes, we are incredibly fortunate to have volunteers who selflessly give their time to help others,” Thompson said.

“The anniversary of the 2025 floods is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary efforts we witnessed from volunteers. We saw emergency service personnel, community organisations and everyday locals step forward to help their neighbours through incredibly difficult circumstances.”

From emergency services and recovery support to sporting clubs, charities and community groups, volunteers continue to play an important role across the electorate.

“Whether responding to floods and storms, supporting recovery efforts, helping community groups or simply checking in on those doing it tough, volunteers make an enormous difference,” Thompson said.

WOW Day, marked by volunteers wearing orange, recognises the contribution of State Emergency Service volunteers and other emergency responders who support communities during times of need.

Thompson said the day was a chance to acknowledge the dedication of volunteers who are always ready to help when called upon.
