Top female skateboarders to return to Lismore for Momentum festival

Lismore City Council will welcome some of Australia’s leading female skateboarders to the Northern Rivers in July when Momentum arrives at the Lismore Skatepark.

The two-day festival will be held from Saturday, 4 July to Sunday, 5 July and is designed to encourage participation, skill development and confidence among women and girls in skateboarding ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.

The event follows Rumble on the River, a Skate Australia pathway competition held in Lismore earlier this year, which attracted 150 competitors from across Australia.

Momentum will focus on female participation and emerging talent, featuring Street and Bowl competitions, coaching sessions, music, food and community activities. The festival will bring together elite and aspiring skateboarders at the Lismore Skatepark while promoting greater involvement in the sport among women and girls.

Lismore City Mayor Steve Krieg said the event built on the success of Rumble on the River.

“Rumble on the River showed Lismore could deliver an elite-level event of national significance, demonstrating exactly what this skatepark is capable of,” Krieg said.

“It was the test, and Lismore passed with flying colours.

“Momentum is the next step. It is about empowerment, participation and making sure the benefits flow back to our local skaters, especially young women and girls who are building their confidence and skills in the sport.

“I am especially encouraged to see more young women and girls getting involved, backing themselves and making the space their own.”

Momentum is billed as Australia’s first all-female skateboarding competition and will provide opportunities for local participants to compete, learn and connect alongside some of the country’s top female skateboarders.

The event is open to women and girls of all experience levels, from first-time skaters to those seeking to progress through competitions, coaching programs and development pathways.

Event organiser Christopher Winn, from the Mid North Coast Skate Club, said the festival aimed to deliver broader community benefits in addition to competition outcomes.

“Celebrating women and girls in sport is at the heart of Momentum, creating stronger communities and healthier cultures,” Winn said.

“When participation grows, so too does confidence, connection and opportunity, not just in the skatepark, but in life beyond sport.

“Through skateboarding, Momentum helps young athletes see what is possible and feel supported to pursue it.

“We are thrilled to have the support of Lismore City Council in 2026”

Lismore City Council says the skatepark is an important recreation and community facility, providing young people with opportunities to be active and connect with others.

Council’s Manager City Brand, Advocacy and Product, Rebecca Sproule, said the event was expected to attract competitors and visitors from across New South Wales and south-east Queensland. She said the facility’s long-term value would be reflected through ongoing community use and repeat visitation.

“Major events are important for our city’s brand and economy, but the real value of this facility is what happens here week after week,” Sproule said.

“If we can help more young people get involved, especially young women and girls, then we are doing exactly what this skatepark was built to do.”

Lismore City Council and Visit Lismore are supporting Momentum alongside government, industry and skateboarding partners.

The mentoring and participation components of the event are supported by the NSW Government through the Office for Youth Holiday Break program.

Registrations open next week.
