A Glenreagh local has been recognised at the 36th annual TAFE NSW Gili Awards, which celebrate excellence among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff and programs.
Held during National Reconciliation Week, the awards recognise outstanding achievements in education, leadership, community contribution and cultural advocacy across NSW.
TAFE NSW Coffs Harbour graduate Billy York received the Agriculture, Transport and Manufacturing Student of the Year award.
York, who completed a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology, was recognised for his resilience, personal growth and determination in returning to study and achieving success. He was also acknowledged for mentoring others and making a positive contribution in his workplace and community.
“I first started at TAFE when I was 19, but honestly, I wasn’t the best student back then. I left, moved away, and spent years trying to improve myself,” York said.
“When I returned home, an opportunity came up for a Heavy Vehicle apprenticeship at 31, and I grabbed it. I chose this course because I love fixing things and enjoy a challenge.
“Winning this award means a lot because it reflects how far I’ve come, both as a student and as a person.
“I’m proud to be recognised for doing something I genuinely love and for proving to myself that I could succeed.”
York said he hoped his experience would encourage others.
“I hope my story encourages others to back themselves and keep going, even if the path hasn’t been straightforward,” he said.
TAFE NSW Managing Director Chloe Read said the Gili Awards highlighted the role of education and skills training in creating career opportunities and strengthening communities.
“At TAFE NSW, we’re committed to creating culturally safe and inclusive learning environments where students like Billy feel supported and empowered to reach their full potential,” Read said.
“The Gili Awards reinforce the critical role of education in creating meaningful, enduring positive change – not just for students but also their families, employers, and communities.
“Billy’s story is an inspiring example of determination and leadership, and he should be very proud to be recognised among such outstanding finalists.”
