Surf Life Saving clubs across the North Coast and Mid North Coast have received new rescue jet skis as part of the State Government’s record $23 million investment in water safety.
Ahead of the summer patrol season, new Rescue Water Craft have been delivered to clubs at Byron Bay, Ballina, Evans Head, Clarence, Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour.
The new jet skis form part of Surf Life Saving NSW’s expanded statewide rescue fleet of 67 watercraft and are equipped with upgraded rescue and safety technology, including live-tracking systems and personal locator beacons to help volunteer lifesavers respond more effectively in challenging surf conditions.
The investment strengthens emergency response capability across one of the state’s busiest coastal regions, supporting faster rescues for local communities and the large number of visitors who flock to North Coast beaches each year.
Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib said the expanded fleet would improve safety along the coast.
“We’re delighted that the Minns Labor Government’s record investment has supported Surf Life Saving NSW to bring the statewide strength of jet skis up to 67 – creating the most comprehensive rescue capability our state has ever seen.” he said.
“From the North Coast to the Illawarra, this will mean more communities are better protected year-round, not just during the summer patrol season.”
Rescue Water Craft, drones and Emergency Rescue Beacons are now deployed along the NSW coastline to support rapid, year-round emergency response and improve safety for residents and visitors.
Over the past three surf seasons, jet skis have been used in nearly 1,000 rescues across NSW, including almost 300 during the 2025–26 season.
In addition to expanding the rescue fleet, the Minns Labor Government has funded the installation of 64 Emergency Rescue Beacons at known coastal blackspots, bringing the total number operating across NSW to 68.
Surf Life Saving NSW chief executive Steve Pearce said the equipment would make a significant difference for volunteer lifesavers responding to emergencies.
“Jet skis are the backbone of our Rescue Services response capability, especially away from patrolled locations and in search and rescue situations,” said Pearce.
“The continued support of the NSW Government ensures our volunteer surf lifesavers have access to modern, purpose-built equipment that enables faster response times, improved safety for rescue personnel and better outcomes for those in need along the state’s coastline.”
Pearce said operators using the new watercraft would also receive upgraded personal protective equipment.
“We’re really pleased that in addition to supplying the fleet of jet skis across the state, operators who use the new equipment will also be fitted out with a complete suite of PPE including personal flotation devices, helmets, trauma kits and full-length wetsuits.”
