The City of Coffs Harbour has committed funding to complete the detailed design for the Jetty Strip redevelopment, a key step in preparing the project for construction and future grant opportunities.
Councillors were told at the 23 July meeting that the detailed design is expected to cost $2.5 million. The current budget includes $500,000, with a further $1.56 million forecast for 2027–28 and $440,000 for 2028–29.
The Jetty Strip redevelopment is part of the broader revitalisation of the city’s waterfront precinct. The project includes lowering the road through the strip and relocating underground infrastructure, while also aligning with the proposed redevelopment of the adjacent Jetty Foreshore.
Mayor Nikki Williams said the complexity of the project reflected the scale of the work required.
“It is an enormously complicated and expensive project – completion of the Jetty Strip works is estimated at some $26 million (stages 1, 1A and 2). But it’s also a tremendously important project for Coffs Harbour,” Williams said.
“Getting the detailed design work done and having the project shovel-ready will improve our prospects of attracting external funding.”
The project requires the relocation of underground water, wastewater, stormwater, electricity and telecommunications services within the road reserve before construction can begin.
Council said detailed civil, landscape and utility designs cannot be completed until planning for the proposed Harbour Drive–Orlando Street traffic signals is further advanced.
City Infrastructure Director Andrew Beswick said final approval for the traffic signals typically takes between 18 and 24 months.
“To expedite that the City suggests engagement of an external design team – one accustomed to navigating the TfNSW process efficiently, to limit the risk of delay,” Beswick said.
