Stolen car, machetes and a hidden gun: wanted man caught hiding in Casino

Double demerit points will apply for the holiday season

A wanted man allegedly fled police in a stolen Commodore, tearing from Coraki into Casino on the wrong side of the road.

Hours later, after a search with police dogs, he was found hiding on a Casino street, with a gun allegedly stashed in a bag nearby.

It started about 1.15pm on Saturday, 31 October, when Richmond Police District officers on patrol in Coraki spotted a Holden Commodore on Spring Street.

Behind the wheel, police say, was a man wanted on multiple outstanding warrants.

The car was no clean ride either. Checks revealed it had reportedly been stolen from a property in Casino the day before.

Officers tried to pull the car over. The driver allegedly refused to stop.

A pursuit took off towards Casino. Police will allege the driver sped and drove on the wrong side of the road.

It became so dangerous that police called the chase off.

But the trail did not go cold for long.

The Commodore was found dumped on East Street, Casino. The driver was gone, allegedly having fled on foot.

Inside the car, police allegedly found several weapons, including machetes and knives, along with prohibited drugs. The car was seized for forensic examination.

Officers threw a perimeter around the area. Traffic and Highway Patrol and the Dog Unit joined the hunt.

About 4.40pm, more than three hours after the pursuit began, they found the 27-year-old hiding on Hartley Street, Casino, and arrested him.

Nearby, police allegedly found a bag containing a firearm and ammunition.

At Casino Police Station, two outstanding warrants for robbery and pursuit-related offences were executed.

He was also hit with 10 fresh charges:

  • police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly
  • never licensed person drive vehicle on road
  • drive conveyance taken without consent of owner
  • possess unauthorised prohibited firearm
  • possess unregistered firearm – prohibited firearm
  • not keep firearm safely – prohibited firearm
  • acquire firearm no licence or permit – prohibited firearm
  • possess ammunition without holding licence, permit, or authority
  • acquire prohibited firearm subject to prohibition order
  • acquire ammunition subject to prohibition order.

He was refused bail.
