Casino seniors ready to ramble on

Goonellabah Wanderers

Older Casino residents are being encouraged to get active and make new social connections through a free community walking group launching this month.

Casino Ramblers will start on Tuesday, 18 August, giving people aged 60 and over a safe and welcoming way to improve their health and wellbeing.

Supported by Northern NSW Local Health District’s (NNSWLHD) Health Promotion Team and Richmond Valley Council, the group is part of the Heart Foundation Walking program, Australia’s largest network of free community walking groups.

NNSWLHD Healthy Ageing Health Promotion Officer Leanne White said walking offered significant physical, mental and social benefits for older people.

“Walking is a gentle and accessible form of exercise that can improve physical health, support cognitive function and boost mental wellbeing,” White said.

“It’s also a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, build social connections and spend time outdoors. Staying socially connected is just as important for our health and wellbeing as staying physically active.”

Casino Ramblers is open to people of all walking abilities and aims to provide a supportive environment where participants can enjoy regular physical activity with others in their community.

The first walk will start at 9.30am on Tuesday, 18 August, at Crawford Square Park in Casino, with participants asked to meet near the barbecue area.

The group will meet every Tuesday and is free to join.

Community members are also being encouraged to become volunteer walk leaders and help support the group as it grows.
