Two charged following vehicle stop in Ballina

A man and a woman have been charged after police stopped an allegedly stolen vehicle in Ballina last night.

About 9:45 pm on Tuesday, 18 August, Highway Patrol officers stopped the vehicle on Tamar Street after it was reported stolen from Queensland.

Police allege the 29-year-old male passenger ran from the vehicle after it stopped. He was arrested a short time later.

Police searched the man and a bag he had allegedly dropped, seizing a firearm, ammunition and a glass pipe.

The man and the driver, a 33-year-old woman, were taken to Ballina Police Station.

The man was charged with six offences:

  • Possess unauthorised prohibited firearm
  • Not keep firearm safely-prohibited firearm
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence/permit/authority
  • Possess shortened firearm (not pistol) without authority
  • Acquire firearm no licence or permit-prohibited firearm, and
  • Possession of equipment for administering prohibited drugs.

Police also executed four outstanding warrants for alleged domestic violence-related offences.

The woman was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, and breach of bail.

Both were refused bail and are due to appear before Bail Division Court 1 today, Wednesday, 19 August.
